Institute Presentation

The Pediatric Burn Center was founded in 1977 and is an integral part of the University Children’s Hospital. For the first time children suffering scald and burn injuries could be treated in a separate burn unit by a specialized and multi-disciplinary team of doctors and nurses. Upon founding, the Pediatric Burn Center was the first of its kind in Europe.

10 years later the center had already gained international reputation. During the last 35 years our team has pioneered many innovations in the field of treatment of children with severe burn injuries.

In 1990 a child suffering from severe burns was successfully treated at our center for the first time using laboratory-cultured skin tissue. Over the years an increasing number of children with diverse skin disorders and malformations such as giant nevi, epidermolysis and other skin diseases have also received treatment.

In 1999 a patient was treated for the first time using artificial dermal skin substitute, which had been developed in the USA. In the meantime we consider this special type of treatment standard practice at our center.

In the year 2000, a team of researchers under the supervision of a cellular biologist commenced work on a multilayer skin substitute with the aim of not only facilitating the production of laboratory-grown total skin substitutes, but also to minimize the effects of scarring seen following skin grafting.

In the course of the 35 years since the center was founded, visitors from all over the world have come to Zurich to both observe the team at work and to actually participate in the work itself.
