Institute Presentation

The Department of Biochemistry is a research group at the Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre (RUNMC) and is part of the Nijmegen Centre for Molecular Life Sciences (NCMLS). It performs a broad spectrum of research concerning cellular energy production, signal transduction, cell-cell and cell-environment interactions. The ultimate goal of this research is to translate the results into potential new therapeutics as well as tissue engineering and regenerative medicine products.

A major theme of the workgroup Matrix Biochemistry is tissue engineering, considering the design of bioscaffolds that generates signals for the cells to differentiate or proliferate, eventually leading to the formation of new tissues. In these processes, extracellular matrix molecules -like collagens and glycosaminoglycans- play an important role and are therefore at the centre of our investigations.

In light of the EuroSkinGraft project, RUNMC will design and perform the biochemical quality control of the skin substitutes provided by Partner 01a and Partner 05 before and after implantation. Furthermore we will perform the biochemical and gene-expression analysis of the skin constructs at different time points after implantation.
